The client is the IT-Department of a leading technology and manufacturing company. This company creates smart solutions and products for pushing digitalization in the industry, in infrastructure and mobility.
About the Client
Problem Statement
The client had to make data-driven decisions. Therefore, collecting vast amounts of data from different sources that can be turned into knowledge can become possibly problematic if there isn’t a proper model for that.
The current solution did not support this use case because of the architecture. The approach from the client was based on several distributed Data Warehouses on SAP databases. Therefore, the team had to collect the data and store them efficiently. As such, the overall goal was to put the data in one Data Warehouse.
The Challenge
The client wanted to have a Data Vault solution with focus on the architecture and standards of the client side IT-Department. Therefore the following aspects needed to be considered:
- Collect all data from the several data warehouses
- Create one data warehouse only
- Put the collected data in the data warehouse
- Make the analysis faster
- Implementation of Data Vault 2.0 Model
- Moving data from a core data platform to a cloud solution
The Solution
To satisfy the customer’s requirements, a POC was developed that provided the following solutions:
- Migration of the data from the SAP HANA solution to snowflake
- A centralized data collection increases the efficiency which leads to lower costs
- For the development of information marts, the data in snowflake was converted into the Data Vault structure (with the same business rules)
Tangible Results for the Client
With this POC, the client is able to:
- Have a more structured and flexible way to handle existing and incoming data, which are one of many advantages of using the Data Vault modeling approach
- Use the Data Vault approach and reuse the old business rule, which secures data consistency
- Receive a performance boost which led to decreasing costs
